Households

How a household works in Keel

Four ways to set one up, what each one starts with, and the private space everyone keeps.

A household connects the budgets of the people you live with. You start one from Settings, under Household. It stays separate from your own sign-up, so you can add it whenever it suits you, or never.

Setup asks how your family handles money. Your answer picks some starting settings. It doesn't lock you in, and changing it later never shares anything on its own.

ArrangementWhat it starts with
Independent budgetsEach person keeps their own budget and chooses what the household sees of it. There is no shared budget unless you add one.
One combined budgetA shared budget for the household's income, bills, limits and goals, managed by the adults who are editors. Your own budget still exists alongside it.
One person managesOne adult runs the household and keeps budgets for family members who don't have their own sign-in. Nobody else has to be invited.
Personal and sharedEveryone keeps a personal budget, and a shared budget covers common costs. People usually agree on what each one puts in.

Whichever you pick, every adult with a sign-in keeps a personal space nobody else can open. Joining a household shares nothing by itself. A household admin can't change what you share, and neither can whoever pays for Keel.

The household also gets its own overview in Money, with the household's spending, shared budgets and contributions for the month. You switch between your budget, a shared budget and the overview with the selector at the top of Money.

Roles decide who can change things in a shared budget. Viewers can read it, editors can also change it, and admins can also invite and remove people. No role opens someone's personal budget or a family member's budget.
